Cisco's #1 and #2 ranked bestselling product part numbers have defective memory.

I've confirmed that Cisco's #1 and #2 ranked bestselling product part numbers are experiencing field failure rates because of defective memory:
1% of Cisco products generate 50% of Cisco product revenue
The top 2 bestselling Cisco product part numbers with product description, ranked by the most product revenue generated for Cisco as of December 2008:
- WS-SUP720-3B - Cisco Catalyst 6500/Cisco 7600 Supervisor 720 Fabric MSFC3 PFC3B.
- WS-X6748-GE-TX - Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, 48-Port 10/100/1000 RJ-45 Cisco Express Forwarding 720 Interface Module.
Incredulously, both of the above product part numbers that are ranked as Cisco's top 2 bestselling products are on the list below as having defective memory. |

Typically, defective Cisco memory components are more than 2-3 years old and suffer a functional failure when subjected to a power cycle event (turned off and on). The memory failure is attributed to a degradation mechanism in a specific memory circuit design.
These defective Cisco components are commonly used as the main memory of the processor for the operating system. They include memory modules and discrete on-board memory (individual components soldered on a line card or similar printed circuit board assembly).
Defective Cisco memory slowly degrades over time requiring a power cycle to experience a hard failure.
The following Cisco part numbers have experienced field failure rates because of defective memory:

If the suspected Catalyst 6500 supervisor, linecard, or fixed configuration hardware has been in operation for approximately 24 months, the product hardware might fail to boot up due to memory failure during a power cycle event. This is caused by one or more of these actions:
- Chassis power cycle
- Upgrade the software
- Reload after installation
- Reload the entire product
- Online Insertion Removal/Replacement (OIR)
Note: This issue does not affect boards while the boards are in operation. The board failure might occur after one or more of the actions listed are executed. For the affected Catalyst 6500 hardware, no error messages are common in all situations. If error messages are seen, they might have these characteristics.
