Cisco insight series: Expendable Cisco business units and employees Update 8-22-11: CBS News seeks to interview laid off Cisco employees in San Jose Update 8-15-11: California law firm warns Cisco employees: Do not sign severance agreement Update 8-12-11: Cisco has cut 62 employees in Santa Clara, 79 employees in Rancho Cordova, 87 employees in Irvine, 178 employees in San Francisco and 1,044 employees in San Jose. Update 8-7-11: 1,826 Cisco WebEx and collaboration employees guillotined by Tandberg executives
Update 8-4-11: A guiding principle of Cisco's layoffs, "Those who were laid off might have worked 100% for Cisco, but people who work 100% for their managers are preferred." 16-year Cisco employee headcount chart:
Source: Cisco Form 10-K Filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. *2010 thru 1996: MFG + Engineers + Sales + Admin = TOTAL **1995: NonUSA + MFG + Engineers + Sales + Admin = TOTAL On April 26 Cisco offered its Employee Early Retirement (EER) program to about 5,900 Cisco employees in the U.S. and Canada who met the eligibility requirements. The program closed on June 24 with approximately 35% (2,058 employees) taking Cisco's offer. On May 5 Cisco's incompetent (at least in my opinion) CEO John Chambers permanently embedded his disastrous operating commitee, councils, boards and working groups management structure deeper within Cisco. On May 26 Cisco's Human Resources SVP suddenly bolted from Cisco! On July 19, Cisco dumped 5,000 employees by selling its manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico. Additionally, specifically targeting employees who are U.S. Citizens, August 19 will be the last day of employment for 4,400 more Cisco employees (including 15% of vice president-level and above employees). Employees will be notified of their fate starting August 2 - 4. The week of August 2-4 Tandberg executives laid off 1,826 Cisco WebEx and collaboration employees, learn more... Furthermore, during Q1'FY12, Cisco will layoff 1,200 members of its contingent workforce. Also, Cisco hired Lee Hecht Harrison to provide career transition support for its laid off employees. Finally, during Cisco's Q4 and FY11 earnings conference call it will announce specific Cisco Business Units that are targeted for elimination.
