Cisco's former $6 billion dollar man favors bare metal switching
Last week Scott Raynovich revealed:
"Verizon has made a massive push for bare metal... They have a huge initiative under way... They can reduce their costs massively..."
I mean the Raynovich report:
Verizon Mounts 'Massive' White-Box Push
Adds color to the remarks of John Chambers during Cisco's Q1'FY15 earnings conference call:
"U.S. service provider however declined at -18%... Service provider declined on a global basis by -10%...
"Our Q2 guidance reflects an added nature of conservativism primarily related to reduce spend at several large U.S. service providers...
"Service provider video declined -12%...
"Service provider is the big challenge, let me be very explicit, that's due to two to three U.S. service providers, who have dramatically slowed the order rates and I mean dramatically slowed the order rates with us."
So who are the vendors eating Cisco's lunch at Verizon?
Well, according to Raynovich:
"The vendors for Verizon include Cumulus for the Linux-based network operating system (OS), Pica8 for switching software, and Juniper for routing and switching technology that helps tie the network together with VXLAN technology, according to two separate sources close to the trial."
On a side note as the "screen shot" below shows, Cisco's confidential agreements with Verizon are not so confidential:
