Doug Merritt Joins Splunk as Senior Vice President, Field Operations

"Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), provider of the leading software platform for real-time Operational Intelligence, today announced that Doug Merritt has joined the Splunk executive team as senior vice president, field operations. In this role Merritt will have direct worldwide responsibility for Splunk direct sales, channel sales, business development, strategic partnerships, pre-sales, education, sales operations and consulting."

With 1,266 direct reports, Cisco's senior vice president of marketing, Karen Walker, appears to have won a major power struggle within Cisco.

How so?

Well according to rumor, Cisco's senior vice president of products and solutions marketing, Doug Merritt (who had 349 direct reports), and Cisco's vice president of enterprise marketing, Marie Hattar (who had 86 direct reports), are both out.

In a recent blog post, Marie Hattar pontificated:

"At Cisco, we refer to the Internet of Everything as the increased connections among four key components: people, things, data and process. The true power of IoE is best seen when all four of these components work together to change how we enable intelligent processes."

I'm not embarrassed to admit that I have no idea what the above explanation of the Internet of Everything means (especially with regard to Cisco's product roadmap), do you?

I've confirmed that Doug Merritt has left Cisco.

In a blog post last fall, Merritt preached:

"At Cisco we've been developing technologies to help businesses and governments harness the potential intelligence in the Internet of Things for years."
